10 Different Cheese Styles You Should Know
Everybody loves cheese! There are hundreds of cheese types made all over the world, made using the milk from different types of animals, including cows, buffalos, goats and sheep. If you’re just beginning to explore the incredible world of cheese, then the following are ten of the most popular cheese styles that you should try:
- Cheddar – Cheddar originally comes from the town of Cheddar, England. It’s a firm cheese that ranges in flavor, from mild to sharp, and in color, from white to deep orange. The longer cheddar is aged, the sharper the flavor becomes.
- Gouda – Gouda is a Dutch cheese made from cow’s milk that is generally semi-hard to hard. It’s flavors and consistency vary wildly depending on how long it’s aged. Younger goudas are creamier, while aged goudas are harder and richer.
- Mozzarella – Mozzarella is an Italian cheese made from water buffalo milk. It’s made by heating fresh, pulled-curds in warm water and stretching it by hand before it’s rolled into balls. Mozzarella is, of course, the choice cheese for pizza.
- Feta – Feta is one of the oldest cheeses in the world. It’s a soft cheese from Greece made from sheep milk, goat milk and sometimes cow’s milk. It’s white and has a bit of a sour taste.
- Parmesan – Parmesan is a hard Italian cheese that’s aged for at least 12 months and has a deep caramel and nutty flavor that’s often grated onto salads and pasta.
- Camembert – Camembert is a French cheese that’s aged at least three weeks. Camembert varies greatly, but the Camembert found in the U.S. tends to be rich, buttery and easily spreadable.
- Manchego – Manchego is a Spanish cheese made from the milk of Manchega sheep. The cheese is unique in that it’s aged at least 60 days. Younger Manchego has a buttery, almost creamy-like texture, whereas aged manchego is saltier.
- Brie – Brie is a very soft cow’s milk cheese from France that can be easily spread. The longer it ages, the stronger the taste becomes. The rind of the Brie can also generally be eaten.
- Swiss – Swiss cheese, comes from Switzerland. Made from cow’s milk, it’s sweet, nutty and lightly flavored. It’s known for having holes in it, which are caused by the release of carbon dioxide during the maturation process.
- Gruyere – Gruyere is a hard cheese made from cow’s milk that originates from Switzerland. It’s often aged for up to a year. The younger it is, the creamier and nuttier it tastes, whereas the older it is, the earthier it tastes.
