1. Hurricane

As one of New Orleans’ most famous drinks, it’s no surprise that the Hurricane made the top of this list. Made with fruit juices and rum, the Hurricane packs plenty of sweet, fruity flavor. It only takes a few minutes to whip up at home, and it’s an easy cocktail to prepare in bulk for larger groups.

Ingredients
• 2 oz light rum
• 2 oz dark rum
• 1 oz lime juice
• 1 oz orange juice
• 1 oz passion fruit juice
• 1 tbsp simple syrup
• 1 tbsp grenadine
• Maraschino cherry and orange slice for garnish

Just add the rum and juice to a cocktail shaker, then shake until chilled and serve in a hurricane glass. For a larger serving, stir the rum and juices in a pitcher and serve over ice.

2. Sazerac

You can’t celebrate Mardi Gras without having one of New Orleans’ most historic drinks: the Sazerac. First introduced in the mid-1800’s, most associate this drink with swanky craft cocktail bars. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be a mixologist to prepare this classic cocktail at home.

Ingredients
• 2-1/2 oz rye whisky
• 1 sugar cube
• 2 dashes Peychaud’s bitters
• 1 dash Angostura bitters
• Absinthe
• Lemon peel for garnish
• Ice

The recipe is quite simple. Coat the interior of an Old-Fashioned glass with a few drops of absinthe then discard the Absinthe. Muddle the sugar cube with water in an Old-Fashioned glass, then add ice, whisky and bitters. Stir and strain the whisky and bitters mixture and pour it into the second glass. Garnish with lemon peel and enjoy. If you prefer your Sazerac less sweet, omit the sugar cube.

3. Pimm’s Cup

The Pimm’s Cup is a simple, refreshing drink perfect for a sunny day on the parade route. Not too sweet, not too bitter, it’s sure to be a crowd favorite. Originally crafted in Britain, the Pimm’s Cup gets its name from its core ingredient, a gin-based liqueur. The classic recipe includes Pimm’s No. 1, cucumber, mint leaves and ginger ale or lime juice.

Ingredients
• 2 oz Pimm’s No. 1
• 2 oz ginger beer or ginger ale
• 1 cucumber slice
• 1 sprig fresh mint
• 1 cup of ice cubes

All you’ll need to do is add Pimm’s to your glass, finish with ginger beer and garnish. The base ingredients compliment many different flavor profiles, so have fun with this recipe and make it your own! Strawberries, oranges and apples are some ingredients included in alternative recipes of this versatile drink.

4. Milk Punch

Milk Punch is a timeless cocktail that tastes great chilled or hot. So no matter what the weather’s like for Mardi Gras, you’ll be set with this one. It offers just the right combination of spice and sweetness to kick off your night right.

Ingredients
• 1 oz brandy
• 1 oz dark rum
• 1 tsp sugar
• 2 dashes vanilla extract (optional)
• 4 to 6 oz whole milk

Add enough milk to suit your preferences – you may also substitute bourbon for the brandy or rum if preferred. Serve over ice or make the punch with heated milk and serve in a warmed mug. If you really want to go all out, consider adding a colored sugar rim to the glass in Mardi Gras purple, green and gold.

5. Bloody Mary

As the breakfast cocktail of the south, the Bloody Mary is considered a Mardi Gras morning staple. While everyone has their own way of preparing this cocktail, core ingredients will include vodka, tomato juice, Tabasco sauce, Worcestershire sauce, lime juice, celery, salt and pepper.

Ingredients
• 1 cup vodka
• 4-1/2 cups tomato juice (or prepared mix such as Zing Zang)
• 2 tbsp lime juice
• 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
• Tabasco sauce
• Celery
• Salt and pepper

Bring all the ingredients together and add Tabasco sauce to suit your preferences, whether you enjoy a subtle note of heat or blazing-hot spice. Looking to make your Bloody Marys stand out? Garnish with everything from boiled shrimp, bacon, and spicy sausages to olives stuffed with cheese.
